Amy came upon CrossFit North County at a trivia night benefit…there was an auction item for our Foundations Course and 1 month unlimited; she bid and won!
Here is a little more tidbits on our Athlete of the Month: Amy Harper
What is you athletic background?
I enjoy hiking and biking, but I’m generally not athletic at all. Athletics have been a spectator sport for me post high school.
What do you do for a living?
I am a retired speech pathologist and work part-time as an English Department Adjunct at St. Louis Community College. I also work part-time as a Retention Specialist for MERS/Goodwill.
Have you trained before? If so, what are the differences you like about CrossFit than your past training?
I have previously worked with a personal trainer in his home twice weekly, and I’ve joined and gone to various gyms over the years, but I never stuck with any exercise efforts long term. A few years ago, I earnestly did P90X and had great results; then as usual, I didn’t continue with it. I really like the combination of individual attention and instruction provided by the coaches with the group workout.
Favorite movement: Deadlifts
Favorite WOD: Any that don’t involve running!
Favorite CrossFit moment: Earlier this week, I FINALLY was able to lift a bar over my head. It has taken four months for me to be able to do this. It’s only a fifteen-pound bar, but when I started, lifting the PVC pipe over my head was a challenge!
What is one of your main goals for CrossFit? I want to become strong and fit and lose weight.
What do you do outside of the box that is going to help your performance inside the box? Slowly but surely, I’m making better nutritional choices. What do you enjoy on your leisure time? Playing the piano, going to plays and concerts, reading and listening to music.
What advice would you give a new CrossFitter?
Focus on what you are trying to achieve rather than any weaknesses, and take one day at a time.
Any final thoughts on CrossFit? It’s definitely not easy, but even with the scaling coaches provide to address individual needs, every session is a WORKOUT, and the progress is undeniable. Also, the support from everyone in a class is incredible.
